1984 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa Exceptional History | Jeff Jarratt / Abbey Road Provenance | Factory Collection | Extensive Original Documentation Some classic Porsches are defined by their mileage, specification or condition. Occasionally, however, a car comes along with a history that makes it genuinely individual. This remarkable 1984 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Targa is one such example. Finished in White with a special Wine Red leather interior, this right-hand-drive Carrera was ordered new by celebrated British recording engineer and producer Jeff Jarratt, whose career is intertwined with some of the most important recordings in modern music. Jarratt began his career at EMI Studios – now Abbey Road Studios – in 1966 and went on to work as an engineer and producer with some of the biggest names in music, including The Beatles and Pink Floyd, alongside an extensive career recording and producing orchestral and contemporary music. Ordered new by Jeff Jarratt The Porsche's exceptional history file documents its story from the very beginning. Jarratt ordered the car through Autohaus Cigolla of Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany, with surviving correspondence between the supplying dealer, Porsche and Jarratt documenting the specification of the car during 1983. The correspondence even records discussions regarding the specially specified Wine Red leather interior, including individual trim details – a fascinating insight into the process of ordering a new Porsche more than four decades ago. Original Porsche factory correspondence dated December 1983 identifies chassis WP0ZZZ91ZES140477 as a 1984 model-year Porsche 911 Carrera, manufactured in right-hand-drive specification for Great Britain. Personally collected from Porsche Rather than simply having his new 911 delivered, Jarratt travelled to Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory to collect the car personally. His own signed account of the experience, written in November 2004, remains within the history file. Jarratt recalls the excitement of collecting his new Porsche directly from the factory before beginning the journey home towards Calais and England, describing the experience as one he would never forget. It is a wonderful piece of first-hand history which remains with the car today. Approximately two decades with its first owner Jarratt went on to retain the Porsche for approximately 20 years, and his personal account makes clear just how much the car meant to him. He describes the 911 as his “pride and joy” and recalls that he probably spent more time cleaning it than driving it. Whether negotiating heavy city traffic or cruising along the motorway, he remembered the Porsche as a car that had never let him down and had always been a pleasure to drive. His decision to part with it came not through a desire to change cars, but following a knee injury which made prolonged use of the clutch increasingly difficult. The Porsche therefore moved on to its next custodian with a remarkable degree of originality and documentation intact. Exceptional provenance Correspondence from a subsequent owner provides another fascinating chapter in the car's history. Having purchased the Porsche in 2005 at approximately 44,000 miles, he recorded adding only around 12,000 miles during the following five years and described the car as an exceptionally original example with an extensive history file. That history has continued to remain with the Porsche. Today the accompanying documentation includes: •Original Autohaus Cigolla correspondence •Original Porsche factory documentation •Correspondence relating to the car's original specification •Documentation relating to its factory collection •German registration/customs documentation •Jeff Jarratt's signed personal account of his ownership •UK registration documentation •Extensive service and maintenance history •MOT certificates •Correspondence from subsequent custodians A very special 3.2 Carrera Targa For us, this is what makes the car particularly special. It isn't simply an attractive 3.2 Carrera Targa. Its story can be traced from the original ordering process in 1983, through its factory collection at Zuffenhausen and approximately two decades with its first owner, followed by a succession of enthusiastic custodians who understood the importance of preserving both the Porsche and its history. The fact that its first long-term custodian was Abbey Road recording engineer and producer Jeff Jarratt, a man who worked on recordings by The Beatles and Pink Floyd, adds another fascinating dimension to an already exceptional history. For the Porsche collector who values originality, provenance and documentation as highly as the car itself, this represents a particularly compelling example of the classic air-cooled 911. A beautifully documented 1980s Porsche with wonderful provenance, an exceptional history file and a story that would be almost impossible to replicate.
